Organizing decks into folders: a practical guide

SMRT Slides Team · 4 min read

Folders should help people browse when they do not know exactly what to search for. Here is how to keep the tree shallow and useful.

Folders are for browse, not for filing

The best folder structures act like a shop floor plan: broad enough that a new person can guess where to look, shallow enough that nothing is more than two clicks away. If you need five nested folders to find a deck, search will be faster.

Three folder designs that work

  • By motion — Pitches, QBRs, Enablement, Product launches.
  • By owner — Sales, Marketing, Product, Leadership.
  • By lifecycle — Drafts, Approved, Archive.

Combine folders with tags

Use folders for the big bucket and tags for the fine details. A deck can live in one folder but carry multiple tags, so you do not have to choose between browseability and precision.
